If you’re looking for something different to do during your lunch break this week, the City is hosting a couple of events that you may want to consider attending.
Today at noon, the Urban Design Center is hosting UDC Talks at the City of Raleigh Museum on Fayetteville Street. Today’s session, entitled “Art Everywhere: Community Driven Public Art,” features speakers Kim Curry-Evans, Public Art Coordinator for the Office of Raleigh Arts, Jedidiah Gant, Founder of Raleigh Murals Project, and Roberta Fox, Assistant Director of Planning.
Raleigh is quickly becoming a city where art is popping up in unexpected places – and our citizens seem to have a real interest in seeing more. This lunchtime discussion will focus on the intersection of public art, city involvement, and opportunities for beautifying Raleigh. More specifically, speakers will discuss the city’s public art program and recent initiatives that are citizen-driven, recent projects on private property, and public art opportunities available with the city’s recently expanded Façade Grant program.
UDC Talks is free and open to the public. No registration is required – just show up and bring your lunch (optional). Attendees are qualified to receive professional education credits via self-submittal to AICP, AIA, and NCBOLA.
If you’re booked today but have some free time on Friday, stop by the Development Services Customer Service Center or Litchford Satellite Office for an open house. The Development Services Department will host this event on May 20 from 1-3 p.m. to celebrate Building Safety Month. This is a public awareness campaign founded by the International Code Council (ICC). It is promoted each May in an effort to inform residents and businesses about creating safe and sustainable structures through the adoption of modern building codes, effective code enforcement, and the involvement of well-trained professionals.
The open house will be hosted at both of our locations (One Exchange Plaza and the Litchford Satellite Office), so choose the one that is most convenient for you. This event is also free and open to the public, featuring behind-the-scenes tours of our facilities. Light refreshments will be served.
We encourage those with an interest in the following themes to attend: building solutions for all ages; the science behind the code; learning from the past/building for tomorrow; and building codes – a smart investment.
