Thankfully, Hurricane Joaquin was just a reminder that we are susceptible to such storms. I grew up on Florida’s east coast, then moved to eastern N.C. in the mid-nineties, just in time for Hurricanes Bertha and Fran. I’d later witness the full fury of Floyd’s floodwaters, and the chaos brought by storms like Isabel and last year’s “snowpocalypse.” One thing I've learned is that it is best to be prepared. Not only for the weather event, but the aftermath.

We were lucky this time. Understanding that we are not immune to Mother Nature, we created a webpage earlier this year to help explain what to do immediately following a storm. Since FEMA and the City’s Emergency Management office provide a ton of information about preparing for storms and disasters, we figured we’d approach ours a little differently.

Written from a Development Services perspective, "After the Storm" addresses what to do if power is lost, how and when to begin the process of assessing damage to your home, selecting contractors to work on your property, and obtaining permits from the City. It is a good resource for anyone that sustains storm damage and needs a little help figuring out what to do next.

So, to get a taste of what the webpage is all about, take our short interactive quiz. It will test your knowledge and let you know how you scored.

After you’ve had a chance to check out our webpage, I’d love some feedback regarding the content. Especially if you've suffered storm damage to your home. You may have some tips for our readers that need to be shared.

Thanks for reading and ENJOY the SUNSHINE!!
