We’re only three weeks from the official start of summer, and as usual, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of permits issued. This trend is typical during the spring and summer months as these are traditionally the peak seasons for residential construction in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average amount spent on construction is about 35% higher in the summer versus the winter.

One of our most popular blog posts last year was on the subject of permits – specifically, the importance of getting them. I can't stress enough how important it is – from both a safety and financial perspective – to obtain permits before beginning a home improvement project.

We typically reserve our first blog of the month for highlighting noteworthy development projects. This month, however, we are kicking off Building Safety Month and wanted to tell you about our open house. You can still view all of the development plans and rezoning cases submitted during the last month via our website.

The Development Services Department is excited to be observing Building Safety Month (BSM), a public awareness campaign founded by the International Code Council (ICC), during the month of May. This campaign aims to inform residents and businesses about creating safe and sustainable structures through the adoption of modern building codes, effective code enforcement, and the involvement of well-trained professionals.

Raleigh has been named one of the best places to live, work, and play in America. We’ve welcomed many new residents in recent years, spurring a great deal of development in our city – particularly downtown – where pedestrians are plentiful!

In an effort to keep our pedestrians safe, and to guide developers through the planning and design process, the City’s Public Works Department created the first-of-its-kind pedestrian safety manual entitled “Making Great Strides – A guide to accommodating pedestrians in active work zones.” The document, a compilation of best practices for pedestrian accommodations in work zones, lays out the planning and approval process, provides design examples and resources, and gives tips for successful implementation of safety measures.
