Welcome back to DSinsider! Many of you may recall the early days of the DSCSC when the Project Coordination service was in its infancy. The service was added in 2010 and was modeled after similar programs in other jurisdictions. The idea is for the development team of large-scale projects to work with the City’s Project Coordinators (PC’s) to reduce potential roadblocks and keep the project timeline intact. It got off to a slow start, but quickly gained momentum. A high demand for the service resulted in the addition of a third PC position in 2013.

Our PC’s are often the first point of contact when a project is conceived. When discussing the scope of the project with their customers, the PC’s:

  • help establish a timeline for the project;
  • map out a review path that makes sense; and
  • provide insight as to what issues may lie ahead.

The goal is for the project to seamlessly advance through the review process. Once a project is assigned to a PC, customers may make contact at any time to discuss issues of concern. The PC coordinates meetings with review staff and works diligently to address issues and concerns as they arise.

We are proud to have three uniquely qualified PC’s here in the Development Services office. Each has a blend of knowledge and experience that make them so good at what they do.

Sandra Hodges began her journey with the City in 1990 and has been with the Development Services office for more than five years. She was promoted to Project Coordinator in 2013 and specializes in large-scale commercial development projects. Sandra’s extensive job knowledge aids her in guiding customers through the plan review and permitting process. Sandra holds a NC Building Level I certification, is a member of the NC Permitting Personnel Association, and is a licensed Notary Public.

Before he accepted a position with Public Works five years ago, Chip Shankle worked in the private sector, primarily in real estate construction and development. He earned his Real Estate Sales, Real Estate Appraisal, and Professional Surveyor licenses and is a certified Professional Project Manager. Chip joined Development Services in 2013 and has since become the go-to person for City projects.

Jack Newsome has been with the City for twenty years. He spent the first fifteen working with the Inspections Department before taking on his current role. Anyone that has had an Express Review probably knows Jack. He spends a great deal of his time helping customers plan and carry-out expedited plan reviews. He has a wealth of knowledge related to the building code and holds NC Building Level III and NC Fire Level I certifications. He is ICC certified in all areas of the Building trade.
