The Development Services Department receives an average of 44,000 building and trade permit applications a year! With so much development activity happening in the City of Raleigh, the sheer volume of projects can sometimes cause delays in processing. 

Permit applications are accepted online via the permit and development portal, in-person at our customer service centers, or via mail. To prevent project delays for mail-in applications, please take note of the following helpful tips:

  • Always check the permit and development portal to see if you can apply online. Registration is easy and can help you save time when scheduling inspections and paying fees.
  • Submit your project in-person if possible. Applications that are submitted in-person receive priority, by necessity, over mail-in applications.

It is important to note that projects requiring plan review cannot be submitted online via the permit portal. Although we make every effort to process all applications as quickly as possible, mail-in applications may not be processed on the day they are received.
