We’re only three weeks from the official start of summer, and as usual, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of permits issued. This trend is typical during the spring and summer months as these are traditionally the peak seasons for residential construction in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average amount spent on construction is about 35% higher in the summer versus the winter.

 And so it is no surprise that we, too, have seen the steady increase beginning in February of this year. According to a report generated by our Development Services Customer Service Center, we issued a total of 6,188 permits during the month of May, which includes the following types:

• Building;
• Electrical;
• Plumbing;
• Mechanical;
• Fire protection;
• Land-disturbance;
• Street-cut;
• Zoning;
• Utility connection;
• Sign;
• Right-of-way; and
• Floodplain.

This number reflects an increase from January (4, 659) and February (5, 174), and is in line with what was issued during the months of March (6,280) and April (6,268). The May total is about 200 more than what was issued one year ago (5,998 permits were issued during May of 2015). That increase over last year is consistent with the upward trend that we’ve been seeing each year since FY 2009.

As for development activity in May, we’ve had several small subdivision proposals throughout the City. Most of these, such as Fountain Preliminary Subdivision (S-34-16), North Bluff Preliminary Subdivision (S-33-16), and Oberry Preliminary Subdivision (S-31-16), propose just a few residential lots.

A couple of other projects submitted for review include an animal hospital with office/flex space on Louisburg Road near its intersection with Leland Drive, and a gas station/convenience store on New Bern Avenue near its intersection with Raleigh Blvd.
