We typically reserve our first blog of the month for highlighting noteworthy development projects. This month, however, we are kicking off Building Safety Month and wanted to tell you about our open house. You can still view all of the development plans and rezoning cases submitted during the last month via our website.

The Development Services Department is excited to be observing Building Safety Month (BSM), a public awareness campaign founded by the International Code Council (ICC), during the month of May. This campaign aims to inform residents and businesses about creating safe and sustainable structures through the adoption of modern building codes, effective code enforcement, and the involvement of well-trained professionals.

All communities are required to establish building codes. These codes protect citizens from all kinds of disasters – fire, floods, earthquakes, and many more. It is the job of our code officials to keep our citizens safe by enforcing such codes to prevent unnecessary tragedies from occurring.

While this is the first year the City has actively participated in this event, the ICC has been celebrating the program’s success for the last thirty-six years. During that time, we’ve seen major advances in constructing safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient buildings and homes. Our Department’s goal is to improve awareness about building codes and the work that our code officials do to improve and protect the places we live, work, learn, worship, and play.

The main theme of this year’s Building Safety Month is Building Codes: Driving Growth through Innovation, Resilience, and Safety. As previously mentioned, our goal is to spread awareness. To help achieve this, we’ll be hosting an open house on May 20 from 1-3 p.m. This will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the Development Services Customer Service Center and the Litchford Satellite Office. Light refreshments will be served.

This event is free and open to the public. We encourage those with an interest in the following themes to attend: building solutions for all ages; the science behind the code; learning from the past/building for tomorrow; and building codes – a smart investment.

Both of our permit offices are participating in the open house. Choose the location that is most convenient for you:

- Development Services Customer Service Center, One Exchange Plaza, 4th floor, Raleigh, NC 27601
- Litchford Satellite Office, 8320 Litchford Road, suite 130, Raleigh, NC 27615
