I recently blogged about the Online Development Center (ODC), a web application that allows contractors to manage their permits and inspections online. It also provides information about development plans and public improvement projects, Certificates of Occupancy, permit history, and plan-review comments.

Since that post was published, we have completed some enhancements to the ODC which will improve its functionality. The first is a result of SB 468, approved by the N.C. General Assembly back in 2013. The law states that no more than one permit shall be required for the complete installation or replacement of any natural gas, propane gas, or electrical appliance on an existing structure when the work is performed by a person licensed in all trades necessary to complete the work.

While it was fairly simple to adjust our internal processes to address the new law, it was not as easy to “fix” the ODC. We are happy to report that customers using the ODC can now purchase multiple permits (if using the same licensed contractor for all work) and will only be charged for a single permit. This pertains to HVAC change-outs, water heaters, and other appliances that fall under the guidelines of SB 468.

Another enhancement to the ODC has improved the process for obtaining permits for water heater replacements. Now customers can select from five replacement scenarios and the system will automatically apply the appropriate permit types. Customers will no longer be able to purchase one permit when multiple permits are required.

We hope these changes improve the overall use of the ODC and make life a little easier for those that use it. If you have any suggestions for other improvements, please let me know! We are constantly looking for ways to streamline our processes and your feedback lets us know what is working well and what could be improved.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful week!
